Belly Up to the Bar

We’ve had a couple of standard Oddvar IKEA barstools for awhile now. We bought them for the low low price of $12.99 each when we first moved into our humble abode. We used them until we found a dining room set that we liked.

I dug them out of the basement last week and felt inspired to give them a little make-over before our move. They’re perfect for extra seating and have a slim profile so we can just put them against the wall when we don’t need them.

Here we have them in all of their plain, untreated pine glory.

I gave them a coat of primer since they we’re untreated and would soak up the paint. I had plans to recover the seats but Matt thought they looked good with the wood seat.

I agreed but thought the plain pine looked a little too country cottage for us. I was recently inspired by some other bloggers who paired bright white with a dark stain.

So 4 coats of Mahogany stain later (Minwax brand) our stools had a clean, modern updated look.

I also added 2 coats of polyurethane to the seats to give them a shiny seal. Here’s what we have now.

The best part about this project (besides our awesomely update new seating) is that it was FREE! We had the paint, stain, primer and the polyurethane. Not to mention that the stools were originally $12.99 each.

So what have you updated lately? Any forgotten items in the back of your garage or basement that have gotten a new life with some paint?

I think I’m going to do this to our bar stools that we use as plant stands and to our two end tables! I think it’ll look nice with our already white coffee table and our new mahogany floors that are being installed this weekend:) Thanks for the inspiration!
