Dining Redux

We found this sad little dining set at the St. Vincent’s Thrift Shop in Los Angeles. That place was a zoo I tell you. It made Goodwill feel like Macy’s.
We picked it up to the tune of $49 which we were willing to pay since it’s made of real wood and feels pretty sturdy. Even the cheap-o tables and chairs at Target and Walmart are running upwards of $100. I liked the clean lines but really didn’t care for the 80’s finish. Or the nasty seat cushions.
Gross, huh? We sat on them for 2 weeks. Are you disappointed in us or what? I finally couldn’t take it anymore and hauled them out to my makeshift workshop (re:patio).
I lightly sanded the chairs after removing the cushions. Lulu was a huge help, obviously. I primed these babies with my handy BIN primer.
I then added two coats of high gloss Glidden paint. I typically use Benjamin Moore paint for furniture but I was feeling cheap so I gave this a go. It seems to be working out fine. I then added a coat of polyurethane since I knew these would be getting a lot of use.
I had to break up my project into two since my patio workshop wasn’t big enough to get everything done at once. I followed the same steps with the table. I sanded the top of this quite a bit more. I wanted to make sure I had a really smooth surface.
Gratuitous action shot:
So that’s it! Next time I’ll show you how I beautified our chair cushions for $12 and of course the big reveal! So, what have you been working on lately? Do you have an unusual place for DIY projects? Any tips for this renter?

Dude, are you wearing overalls in that photo? I mean, I know InStyle claimed them hot last month and you’re a super-hip SoCal gal now, but REALLY?

Fear not readers-I am not cool enough to wear overalls. It’s a top and jeans. Sorry for the poor lighting. I will try harder not to lead you astray in picking your DIY outfits!
